Zoom Tasting

It is hard socializing during the cold months of the pandemic.  And while vaccinations, like Spring, are on the way we need something to get us through the winter months.  While we can’t hang out in each other’s living rooms the doesn’t mean we can’t drink together.  You might try this idea.

Buy two bottles of the same wine.  Drop one off at a friend’s house and take the other home.  Set a time, hop on Zoom, and drink the bottles with each other.  Want to make more of a meal out of it?  One household can buy the wine and the other cook a dinner to go match.  Want to make more of a game out of it?  Brown bag them and guess what the wine is, what the grapes are, where it comes from. (We’d be happy to set this up for you, so no one knows what’s in the bag.)

Yes, we know that some have too many Zoom meetings but think how much more you’d look forward to them if there was a bottle of wine involved.

Bordeaux Deal of the Day

This small estate, left bank Bordeaux was a great find for us this week.  It is very old school in style. It even still comes in a wooden 6 pk crate.  We have 42 bottles on hand at the shop and another 33 on order next week.  After that we’ll have to see how much more we can lay our hands on.

Located in the Médoc, not far from Lesparre, Château Grand Lacaze cultivates 7 hectares of vineyards.  It is a classic Bordeaux with wonderful earthy notes of leather, basalt, ripe red fruit, and the faintest hint of funk.

Tariff Update

Not the biggest headline of the day, but. . .

In a farewell gesture the Trump Administration has imposed a new 25% Tariff on French and German wines over 14% alcohol   This expands the original tariff that was on wines 14% and under.  The new tariff went live on January 12th (this includes wine already on the water). While the Biden Administration may reverse these tariffs it probably won’t happen very quickly.  This is going to make wine prices very volatile in the near future.  At Madrona Wine Merchants, we remain focused on quality and value, but we expect a few bumps in the coming months.

These tariffs have a huge impact on smaller wineries and importers.

6 days until the Inauguration.
